The Parent Taught Driver Education Program is available to teenagers between the ages of 14 and 17. However, before the instructor (parent, stepparent, grandparent, step-grandparent, foster parent or legal guardian) begins teaching this course, the instructor must have a valid TEXAS driver license. The instructor must also have held a license for the preceding three years; if the instructor has not held a Texas license for the past three years, the instructor's driving record from the previous state of residence will be examined to determine eligibility. Active US military personnel and their spouse may participate as instructors if they hold a valid license from their state of permanent residence or last duty station for the preceding three years.

1New Law in Effect July, 2009

House Bill 339 is now law in Texas and will go into effect September 1st, 2009. This law presents significant changes for teen drivers. In summary, those changes are:

  • Texas law requires a minimum of 34 driving hours with at least 10 hours at night instead of 14 total driving hours. National Driver Training has required 50 hours of driving since our approval in 1997 and we will continue to hold to our high standard.
  • Parent eligibility requirements now include:
    • Must have held a Texas license for the past three years
    • Must not have any felony driving convictions
    • Must have less than 6 points on their current driving record
    • Must not be disabled because of mental illness
  • Driving tests are now mandatory for all new drivers. Teen drivers may no longer waive the skills test with a state trooper.
  • Graduated Driver Licensing restrictions on the newly licensed driver are effective for the first year on the minor's license. The restrictions include:
    • No driving between midnight and 5 am except for emergencies and school or work related activities
    • No more than one passenger under age 21 who is not a family member
    • No use of wireless communications devices except in the case of an emergency.

1 1Good Housekeeping

The March 2003 edition of Good Housekeeping magazine featured an assessment of the traditional driver education and training model taught by schools since 1949. The final grade? A solid F. Good Housekeeping criticized High School and commercial driver training programs for not coordinating class and driving times and for focusing only on the skills needed to pass a driving test.

But what kind of driver education does get Good Housekeeping's approval? The article suggests that you spread out the learning process over several months and incorporated behind the wheel practice concurrently with class study. Further more, focus on techniques to avoid accidents.

No other driver education course has done a better job of incorporating these two lifesaving concepts than National Driver Training Institute's Help for the Teenager Who Wants to Drive.
